The Main concept of Sanghwa Hong‘s work is based on reinterpreting the ordinary with using technology.“Ordinary” is traditionally defined as common and normal. Because of this, anything ordinary is usually estimated as low and less valuable. However, the world is composed of the ordinary. Rather than extraordinary objects, most of the world is comprised of these ordinary objects. According to the notion, ‘ordinary’ is the most valuable component of the world. Ordinaries that are usual are common to many people. We may not even notice what has been lost. The ordinary is the power of retaining our world. It contains common good, which makes our lives be better. However, we tend to excessively pursue objects that are radiant and exciting on a daily basis. Radiant are attractive and unusual, but then drag us to the drastic edge of humanity. Even though this pursuit is leading us to the demolition of our humanity, we don’t recognize it because we are accustomed to these extremes. In his work, ordinariness glimmers by technology and gives us back our notion of the common good.
홍상화의 작업은 평범한, 일상적인 것들을 기술과 융합하여 재해석 하는 것에 기인한다. 평범하고 일상적인 것들은 우리 생활에서 흔하게 볼 수 있고 특별하지 않기에 대수롭지 않게 평가되곤 한다. 하지만 이 세상은 특별하고 멋진 것보다 바로 그 평범하고 일상적인 것들로 구성되어 있다. 이러한 측면에서 평범하고 일상적인 것들은 무엇보다 값진 가치를 가지고 있지만, 평범하고 흔하기 때문에 우리는 그 소중한 것들을 잃어버리고 있음에도 그 사실을 인지하지 못한다. 그 평범하고 흔한것들은 이 세상을 올바르게 지탱해주는 요소이자 우리가 세상에서 추구 해야할 올바른 가치를 담고 있다. 하지만 우리는 우리의 삶에서 점점 더 빛나고 우리를 흥분시키는 것에 끌리게 마련이고, 그 빛나고 흥분되는 것들은 분명 매력적이지만 인간의 감성을 점차 한계까지 밀어낸다. 더 빛나고, 더 흥분되는 것을에 대한 추구가 인간 감성의 파괴까지 이르더라도, 그것에 중독된 우리는 깨닫지 못한다. 그의 작업에서 평범하고 일상적인 것들은 기술과 결합하여 매력적으로 빛나게 되고 우리에게 옳바른 방향으로의 가치를 되찾게 한다.
